The New York Daily News
The New York Daily News is an American newspaper. The paper is published daily in tabloid format, and is the second largest city newspaper in the United States with over 2.3 million daily circulation. Its founding in 1919 marked the first time that a daily newspaper used a tabloid format in the United States. It is not related to the earlier New York Daily News of the 19th century, which ceased publication in 1906.
The Yale Daily News Historical Archive is an online collection of digitized printed editions of the Yale Daily News (YDN) dating back to its founding on January 28, 1878, the nation’s oldest college daily newspaper. The archive is accessible free of charge and open to the public. The YDN is edited and published each weekday when classes are in session by students at Yale University, the nation’s foremost research institution. The newspaper has an editorial stance described as “flexibly centrist with a high-minded, if populist, legacy.”
As the name implies, YDN is devoted to the reporting of current events and news about the world, Yale University, and the city of New Haven. It has a strong political perspective that reflects the diversity of the Yale and New Haven communities, as well as a long tradition of championing women’s issues. It also provides a platform for scholarly and creative work by Yale students. Many YDN writers and editors have gone on to careers in journalism or to prominent positions in government, business, education, science, the arts, and civil rights.
The YDN’s Breaking News articles, which are shorter and more current than the weekly News-2-You editions, provide an exciting way for subscribers to stay informed about important issues, world, sports, entertainment and local news. These stories are great to use in the classroom for reading standards such as main idea, retelling and summarizing. They are perfect for introducing or reinforcing daily news items, as well as for writing practice and analysis.
YDN has been an advocate for the right to freedom of expression and the protection of journalists and their sources. In this spirit, it has been a leader in supporting the work of freelancers who contribute to the paper and in helping to establish legal and ethical guidelines for the profession. It has also been a pioneer in investigative journalism, as evidenced by its coverage of the Lenny Bernstein case and the investigation of the Sandy Hook massacre.
As a publicly held company, the YDN is committed to transparency and disclosure in accordance with the requirements of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. As such, the YDN publishes its financial results quarterly and annually, as well as other financial information, on its website. In addition, the YDN discloses material developments and events in a timely manner through press releases, filings with regulatory bodies and through other media outlets.
