The term entertainment can be used to describe anything from a single-person activity such as solving a crossword puzzle or watching television to a public event such as a musical performance. It can also refer to an agreeable occupation for the mind or diversion: entertaining a crowd or amusing oneself at a ball.

The word originated in the Middle Ages as an abbreviation of the Latin intertenere, which means “to hold inside.” It may be related to the Indo-European root ten, meaning to stretch or extend. Today, the experience of entertainment varies by individual and by society, but can be found in any form: from self-gratification to self-reflection; from social interaction to solitary confinement.
