Entertaiment can be experienced at any scale, from an individual selecting a personal entertainment product from a now enormous array of pre-recorded options to performances adapted for global audiences. It also has the power to cross over between different media, with familiar stories such as Scheherazade (a story from the professional storytelling tradition) inspiring orchestral works by Rimsky-Korsakov and Ravel, a film by Pasolini and innovative video games. However, the experience of entertainment has become closely associated with leisure, and one not unusual understanding of the concept is that it provides fun and laughter – although many entertainments have a serious purpose such as various styles of ceremony, celebration, religious festival or satire for example.
