Daily News

The New York Daily News (officially the New York City Daily News) is an American tabloid newspaper based in Manhattan. It is the oldest of the city’s daily newspapers and was the first to be printed in tabloid format, a form that it pioneered. During its heyday in the 1950s and 1960s, the News was among the largest newspaper titles in the United States, and it was known for its sensationalistic coverage of crime, sports, politics, and local events. Today the paper is owned by Tronc, formerly Tribune Publishing.

The Daily News was founded on January 28, 1919 by Joseph Medill Patterson and is named after its original location in New York City. The News began as a broadsheet and transitioned to the tabloid format in 1925. It was the city’s leading newspaper for much of its history and it competed with its rival, the New York Post. In 1929, the newspaper moved into the 220 East 42nd Street building near Second Avenue, an official city and national landmark designed by John Mead Howells and Raymond Hood. The News remained at this site until 1995, when it moved to its current location at 450 West 33rd Street (also known as 5 Manhattan West) in the West Side of Manhattan. The 42nd Street building remains a landmark and currently houses the former News subsidiary, WPIX-TV.

For more than a century, the Daily News has been an influential source of news and commentary in the New York metropolitan area. The News has also been a leader in innovation and change in the media industry. The newspaper has been one of the first to incorporate radio, television and the Internet into its operations and was an early adopter of computer technology for news production. It has also led in the development of online journalism, including its use of interactive maps and video.

In addition to providing traditional news coverage, the Daily News has long been a major player in entertainment. The paper has published many books and hosted a variety of television and radio shows. It has also been involved in a number of notable advertising campaigns and sponsored a number of political figures and celebrities.
