The Daily News
Founded in 1919, Daily News is the ninth largest-circulation newspaper in the United States and the first in tabloid format. It is owned by tronc, the publishing operation of Tribune Company, and is headquartered at 4 New York Plaza in Lower Manhattan. The News is known for its intense city news coverage, celebrity gossip and a hefty sports section, including sections on the Yankees, Mets and Giants. It is also well-known for its editorial stance, which has traditionally been more moderate to liberal than the staunchly conservative New York Post.
The News has long been a major player in the world of news media, setting trends and influencing debates with its political commentary, social intrigue, and historical analysis. Its focus on big-city affairs has made it a key source for national and international news, as well as local and regional events. In the 1920s, for example, it was the main source of information about political scandals such as Teapot Dome and the love affair between Wallis Simpson and King Edward VIII that led to his abdication. Its coverage of the Great Depression was a precursor to the investigative journalism and muckraking that would characterize much of its work in later decades.
In recent years, the News has refocused its newsroom on digital operations, reducing its print run to less than half of its circulation and shifting much of its content online. Its website, which launched in 2015, is a daily destination for New Yorkers and people around the world. Its mobile app has also been a critical component of the News’ growth.
While the News’ rapid changes have jolted its staff, it has not stopped its relentless pursuit of news. Its reporters have pushed for investigations into corruption at city hall, exposed police abuses and reported on the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on the lives of New Yorkers. Its editorial pages have highlighted the city’s rich history, its diversity and its many cultural offerings.
The News has a AllSides Media Bias Rating of Left. This means the site is biased toward liberal, progressive and/or left-wing thought and policy agendas. This is our most liberal rating.
