About Entertainment

From the Old French entretenement, meaning “to hold together” or “support,” entertainment is a means of diverting and entertaining. It can involve a broad spectrum of activities, from the clown at your child’s birthday party to Broadway theater shows and stadium rock concerts; or it can be as simple as your friends fighting over the last potato chip at a picnic.

Entertainment is often a form of play, which children use for their own enjoyment and development. It can also teach them about adult roles (such as audience members at a performance or caregivers to dolls and pets); develop skills needed for activities such as sports or music; or prepare them for responsibilities like household chores or parenting.
