What is Entertainment?

The word Entertainment comes from the Latin term inter tenere, meaning “to hold inside.” This is an appropriate name for this activity because it is mostly about keeping your attention. From the clown at a birthday party to Broadway shows and stadium rock concerts to your friends fighting over the last potato chip, entertainment is about amusement and distraction. We often talk about visual entertainment as shows, and audio entertainment as music but we could just as easily say that it is anything that stimulates the brain to release seratonin and dopamine. The more the brain is stimulated, the better the entertainment.
